The Problem: An Outdated Victorian Conservatory

Like many homeowners across Hampshire, our clients in this beautiful village just outside Romsey had a conservatory that was no longer serving its purpose.

The original structure featured a classic Victorian-style pitched roof glazed with old polycarbonate sheets. While perfectly fine in its heyday, the lack of modern thermal insulation meant the room suffered heavily from the classic “greenhouse effect.” It was unbearably hot and stuffy during the peak of summer, yet freezing cold and completely unusable throughout the winter months.

Beyond the severe temperature fluctuations, the old polycarbonate roof provided very little acoustic insulation. Even a moderate rain shower sounded deafening inside, making the room an uncomfortable place to relax, read, or entertain guests.

The Solution: A Modern Open-Plan Transformation

The clients wanted to ditch the traditional “bolt-on” conservatory feel entirely. Their goal was to integrate the footprint directly into their main house, creating a fluid, open-plan living room and entertaining area that felt like a natural continuation of the property.

Because of the ambitious scope of this transformation, the project required full planning permission and Building Regulations approval—all of which our expert surveyors and architectural team managed seamlessly from start to finish.

To achieve the clients’ vision, our installation team recommended stripping away the old roof entirely and replacing it with a state-of-the-art Ultraframe Flat Roof. This advanced roofing system is specifically engineered for extensions. It boasts phenomenal U-values that rival traditional brick-and-mortar builds, instantly solving the temperature fluctuations and silencing the noise of the rain.

Flooding the Room with Natural Light

A common concern when upgrading from a fully glazed conservatory to a solid flat roof is the potential loss of natural daylight. Nobody wants to replace a bright, sunny room with a dark, cavernous box. We solved this brilliantly by integrating two large pitched roof lanterns directly into the Ultraframe ceiling.

These dual lanterns act as stunning architectural focal points from the inside, drawing the eye upward and pulling vast amounts of sunlight down into the living space throughout the day.

Seamless Inside-Outside Living

To complete the transformation and truly blur the line between the indoor living space and the garden patio, we installed a stunning set of Smarts Visofold 1000 aluminium bi-folding doors across the entire front elevation.

Engineered from premium grade aluminium, these doors possess exceptional structural rigidity. This allowed us to specify much slimmer frames and maximise the surface area of unobstructed glass. The doors feature advanced polyamide thermal breaks to prevent heat loss, while gliding effortlessly on stainless steel rollers. When folded fully back during the warmer summer months, the entire room opens up, creating the ultimate entertaining space.
