Double Glazing FAQ's
What is the best double glazing?
Double glazed windows come in a variety of materials. The most common and often the cheapest are uPVC, because they offer good efficiency and a lower price. Other materials used include aluminium and timber. Styles and types of windows affect the costs as well, casement windows are the most common. These can come with flush sashes, seamless graf welds on uPVC and can also be mechanically jointed. These change the look and obviously the costs! There are speciality window systems like the Residence Collection, these come at a premium cost, but with far superior looks.
Can I replace the glass in my double glazing?
If you cannot see out of your window because you have condensation inside your sealed double-glazed unit then the unit has ‘broken-down’. This is caused by the seal that bonds the glass together breaking down, it lets external air enter the unit. You can repair misted or cloudy double glazing, so you don't have to change the whole window, you can in most cases just replace the glass instead.
Is secondary glazing as good as double glazing?
Secondary glazing provides much better levels of acoustic insulation than double glazing. The greater the cavity between panes of glass, the better the sound deadening effect is. Secondary glazing installed as far from the primary (existing) window as possible does the best job of noise reduction. In some cases, like listed buildings replacing your windows is not an option, so secondary glazing can be installed with low-e to improve the thermal efficiency or heat losses from your home
How much does it cost to replace misted double glazing?
Giving an exact price for this would be difficult, glass comes with many specifications and this will affect the cost. Toughened glass is more expensive than normal float glass, is the unit argon gas filled? Does it have a modern warm edge spacer? Do you require someone to come out and measure the glass for you and find out what the specification is? On average to supply and fit a sealed unit replacement is around £150, however if you are having multiple units the costs reduce on a sliding scale. A larger unit for a patio door could be as much as £300.
Can I replace a window myself?
Replacing windows is not that hard if you have the correct skillset. One of the hardest parts of installing a window is actually removing the old window. They could have been originally fitted with brackets that are hidden behind the internal plaster line or traditional fixings that can include visible screws or brackets tied to the brickwork. Modern double or triple glazed windows require glass packing to ensure the correct alignment and functionality of the window. The installation of windows is now a building regulation matter and should be signed off by the local building control office or installed through a competent person’s scheme. KJM uses FENSA however there are other schemes that installers can be members of.
