Pilkington Launches Optitherm S3 Plus Triple Glazing Glass
Pilkington Launches Optitherm S3 Plus Triple Glazing Glass
Pilkington UK has unveiled its latest innovation in thermal insulation glass, specifically engineered to enhance triple glazing performance without compromising on aesthetics.
The newly launched Pilkington Optitherm™ S3 Plus is a UK-manufactured, low-emissivity (low-e) glass designed exclusively for triple glazing. It achieves exceptional thermal U-values (as low as 0.6 W/m²K) while significantly reducing the highly reflective “mirror effect” that is often associated with older triple-glazed units.
As triple glazing becomes increasingly popular among homeowners looking to future-proof their properties or prepare for low-temperature heating systems, glass manufacturers are refining how these complex units are engineered.
The latest release from industry leader Pilkington UK—the Optitherm™ S3 Plus—represents a significant step forward in balancing elite thermal efficiency with clear, neutral aesthetics.
Solving the ‘Mirror Effect’ in Triple Glazing
To achieve the exceptionally low U-values required for passive housing and energy-efficient retrofits, triple-glazed units typically utilise two panes of low-emissivity (low-e) coated glass, alongside an uncoated centre pane.
While this double-coating strategy is fantastic for trapping heat inside the home, it has historically presented a visual challenge. Older low-e coatings (such as the previous Pilkington Optitherm™ S1 Plus) could result in a noticeable increase in external reflectance. In certain lighting conditions, this gave the windows a slightly dark or “mirror-like” appearance from the outside.
The new Optitherm™ S3 Plus has been formulated to drastically reduce this external reflection. The result is a triple-glazed unit that looks much closer to standard, neutral double glazing, preserving the natural architectural appearance of the property.
Elite Thermal Performance (0.6 W/m²K)
Aesthetics aside, the primary function of this glass is thermal insulation. Manufactured in the UK, Optitherm™ S3 Plus is an off-line coated glass that meets the strict European Standard EN 1096-3 Class C for durability.
When correctly built into an Argon-filled triple-glazing unit with warm-edge spacer bars, it can achieve a centre-pane Ug-value as low as 0.6 W/m²K. This makes it an outstanding choice for retaining heat and eliminating cold spots near the glass surface.

Typical Applications for Optitherm™ S3 Plus
Because it maintains a neutral appearance while delivering top-tier insulation, this new glass specification is highly versatile. It is typically recommended for:
- Energy Retrofits: Upgrading existing residential windows to highly efficient triple glazing.
- Large Glazed Areas: Ideal for conservatories, glazed kitchen extensions, and bi-fold doors where managing heat loss is critical.
- Low-Energy & Passive Housing: Meeting the stringent U-value requirements of eco-builds.
- Commercial & Residential New Builds: Ensuring compliance with the latest, tightening iterations of the UK Building Regulations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Low-e glass features a microscopically thin, transparent coating that reflects long-wave infrared heat. It allows natural solar light to enter the room but reflects your home’s internal heating back into the property, significantly reducing heat loss.
Standard double glazing uses one pane of low-e glass. To achieve ultra-low U-values, triple glazing often requires two panes of low-e glass. Historically, this doubling of coatings increased the visual reflectance of the unit. Optitherm™ S3 Plus is specifically engineered to counteract this and provide a clearer, more neutral appearance.
It benefits from ‘single stock flexibility’. This means the glass can be used in its standard annealed form or it can be thermally toughened (to meet safety glass regulations) without changing its neutral appearance or thermal performance.
