The "Repair vs. Replace" Reality

If you live in Hampshire, you likely have uPVC or aluminium windows and doors. They were probably sold to you with the promise of being "maintenance-free." However, "low maintenance" does not mean "no maintenance."

Issues like coastal corrosion (common near Portsmouth/Southampton) and hard water deposits (common in Andover) can cause components to fail. But the good news? You rarely need to replace the whole window. Most issues can be fixed for a fraction of the cost.

Typical Repair Costs

Issue Repair Solution Est. Repair Cost Est. Replacement Cost
Cloudy/Misted Glass Replace glass unit only £150 - £ Upwards £500 - £ Upwards
Drafty Window Replace hinges & gaskets £50 - £90 £500 - £ Upwards
Jamming Door Lock Replace gearbox/mechanism £100 - £180 £1050 - £2,500
Stiff Handle Replace handle & oil £20 - £40 N/A (Included in new)

The Economics of Repair: Why "Local" is Logical

When looking for a company to service or repair your windows, you might be tempted to call the biggest name in the county, or a specialist you found online who operates 40 miles away.

However, unlike a full installation—where a surveyor measures everything once and the team returns weeks later for a solid day of work—repairs are different. They are often reactive, unpredictable, and require agility. For the most cost-effective repair, you should ideally look for a specialist within a 15–20 minute radius of your home.

The "Recon" Reality

The vast majority of window and door repairs are not "one-visit" fixes. Unless it is a simple adjustment, the engineer first needs to perform a "recon" (reconnaissance) visit. They need to strip down the door or window to identify the specific part causing the failure. There are thousands of variations of locking mechanisms, gearboxes, and hinges—many from manufacturers that no longer exist.

The typical repair timeline looks like this:

  1. Visit 1 (Diagnosis): The engineer travels to you, strips the unit, identifies the broken part, secures the property, and leaves.
  2. Sourcing: The part is ordered or sourced from a specialist supplier.
  3. Visit 2 (The Fix): The engineer travels back to you to install the new component.

The Andover to Portsmouth Equation

Let’s look at a practical example of why distance kills the economy of repairs. Imagine you live in Portsmouth and you call a repair specialist based in Andover. That is roughly a 50-mile, 1-hour drive (on a good day without the M27/A34 traffic chaos).

If that repair requires two visits, the math stops making sense for both the business and the homeowner:

The Result: You are paying for a technician to sit in a van for 4 hours to do 1.5 hours of work. To make that viable, the company has to charge a heavy "call-out" premium, which often pushes the price closer to the cost of a new door. Conversely, a technician located 15 minutes away spends only 1 hour driving total for both visits. That saving is passed directly to you.

Supply Only Services (DIY)

We also offer a supply-only service for glass sealed units, handles, and letterboxes for those comfortable with DIY.

How to Measure for Glass

KJM are often able to quote over the telephone for glass units. To give you an accurate price, we need just two pieces of information:

  1. The Size: The approximate width and height of the glass (measure the visible glass size only).
  2. The Height from Floor: The distance from the floor to the bottom edge of the glass.
⚠️ Safety Note:
Glazing MUST be manufactured from Toughened Safety Glass if:
  • The bottom of the glass is less than 800mm from the floor.
  • The glass is adjacent to a door (within 300mm).

Frequently Asked Questions

Likely not. This is a classic sign of a "dropped" door or a gearbox that needs lubrication. A service technician can adjust the hinges to realign the door so the locking points engage smoothly without force.

Yes. The glass unit is separate from the frame. If you have condensation inside the glass, we can remove the beading, take out the old unit, and install a new energy-efficient unit while keeping your existing frames.

There are thousands of different window and door profiles used in the UK over the last 30 years. Even "standard" locks have different backset sizes and spindle operations. Without a physical inspection (Recon), it is impossible to know exactly which part your door needs.

We can, but we believe in being honest about costs. For small repairs, the travel charge might outweigh the cost of the repair itself. In these cases, we often recommend finding a reputable trader closer to your postcode to ensure you get the best value for money.
