📌 The Verdict: Which is for you?
- The Purist’s Choice (Residence 9): If you are replacing original 19th-century timber windows, live in a Conservation Area, or want the ultimate heritage aesthetic with decorative interiors.
- The Modern Choice (Residence 7): If you have a modern home, prefer a clean/minimalist “flush” look inside and out, or need a more cost-effective solution that fits standard window openings.
If you are looking for high-end timber alternative windows in Hampshire, you have almost certainly narrowed your search down to two names: Residence 9 (R9) and Residence 7 (R7).
At KJM Group, we install hundreds of these windows across Andover and the surrounding counties every year. The most common question we get is: “They look almost identical in the brochure—so what is the actual difference?”
Table of Contents
1. The Technical Differences
Before we dive into the details, here is the quick technical comparison between the two systems:
| Feature | Residence 7 (R7) | Residence 9 (R9) |
|---|---|---|
| Frame Depth | 75mm (Standard Modern Depth) | 100mm (19th Century Timber Depth) |
| Internal Chambers | 7 Insulating Chambers | 9 Insulating Chambers |
| Glass Bonding | Optional Specification | Optional Specification (Enhanced Security) |
| Aesthetic | Flush Exterior, Flush Interior | Flush Exterior, Decorative Interior |
| Jointing | Choice of Mechanical or Welded | Timberweld® or Mechanical Joints |
| Ideal For | Modern Homes & Standard Replacements | Conservation Areas & Grand Designs |
2. Frame Depth: 75mm vs 100mm
The most critical structural difference is the depth of the frame. This dictates how the window sits in your brickwork and how much work is required to fit it.
Profile Battle
Why 100mm?
This replicates the exact size of old 19th-century timber frames. If you are replacing original wood windows, R9 will often slot perfectly into the reveal, covering the old “brick line.”
The Installation Challenge
Replacing standard 70mm uPVC windows with 100mm R9 frames may require cutting back internal plasterwork or cills. It’s a bigger job, but the result is authentic.
Why 75mm?
This is the industry standard depth for modern windows. It fits into most modern apertures without disturbing plaster lines.
The Installation Ease
R7 is “installation friendly.” It is usually a straight swap for existing PVC or aluminium windows, making it faster and less disruptive to install.
3. The “Flush” Debate: Inside & Out
Both windows are “Flush Sash” windows, meaning the opening part of the window sits flat against the frame externally. They look almost identical from the kerbside.
If you prefer clean lines and a minimalist interior, R7 is often the winner. If you want your windows to look like pieces of furniture with grandeur, R9 is the choice.
4. Joints: The Timberweld Revolution
Historically, uPVC windows were welded at 45 degrees, leaving a tell-tale diagonal line that ruined the “timber effect.” Residence 9 changed the game by using Mechanical Joints—frames that were screwed and glued together just like wood.
Today, technology has advanced further with Timberweld®.
What is Timberweld®?
This patented method allows us to weld the corners of the window for incredible strength, while creating an authentic “butt-joint” effect on both the inside and outside faces. It looks like a traditional mortise and tenon timber joint, but has the strength of a modern fusion weld.
- Residence 9: Can be specified with traditional Mechanical Joints or Timberweld® for the ultimate heritage look.
- Residence 7: Can also use Timberweld®, or you can opt for standard diagonal welds to keep costs down.
This means you no longer have to choose between “strong but ugly” welds or “beautiful but expensive” mechanical joints. Timberweld® gives you the best of both worlds.
Glass bonding is also available on both systems as an optional specification for enhanced security and rigidity in larger sashes.
5. Hardware & Aesthetics
Authenticity is in the details. Residence 9 is typically marketed as a heritage product. To satisfy conservation officers, R9 frames usually feature:
- Authentic Cills: Deep, raditional timber-effect cills (radlington).
- Monkey Tail Handles: Beautiful, hand-forged handles that replicate ironmongery from the 1800s.
- Working Butt Hinges: Unlike standard windows that slide on friction stays, R9 can be specified with working butt hinges for true authenticity.
6. Frequently Asked Questions
Technically, Residence 9 has more chambers (9 vs 7), which offers slightly better thermal barriers. However, both windows are incredibly efficient. When paired with 44mm triple glazing, both systems can achieve U-values as low as 0.8 W/m²K, far surpassing British building regulations.
It depends on your local council (Article 4 directions). Residence 9 is specifically designed to meet these strict rules due to its 100mm depth and heritage detailing. However, Residence 7 is often accepted in less strict conservation areas if specified with the correct woodgrain finish and Timberweld joints. Always check with KJM first.
Generally, yes. Because Residence 9 uses more material (100mm profile) and involves more detailed manufacturing, it typically carries a premium over Residence 7.
